In the 1990s, @Calvin Klein, @Ralph Lauren, and @donnakaran took American fashion global, and they did so through the creation of powerful and sometimes provocative advertising that expressed the values of their brands. Klein took the “sex sells” approach, choosing models like Patti Hansen, Brooke Shields, and, in the 1990s, Kate Moss, to market his designer denim. Karan’s focus was on female empowerment, most famously in her “In Women We Trust” campaign that featured model Rosemary McGrotha as POTUS. Lauren’s ads were rich with narratives that blended Gatsby glamour, British tweediness, and East Coast prep. Each of these designers was essentially exporting the American dream; few things are more available and transformative than fashion, after all. Listen to a new episode of Vogue's 1990s podcast at the link in bio, where Calvin, Donna, and David Lauren reflect on their '90s heyday. Photographed by @アーサー・エルゴート, Vogue, February 1992
