As promised , here are some of my favourite books that I would recommend everyone have on their reading list. They are written by some really smart, incredible women that explore the issue of race in a really brilliant articulate and eye opening way. So many people assume that racism is an American problem. It’s not. It is a global problem and the UK is very much part of that - the UK and it’s history is complicit. @renieddodge now modern classic Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race addresses not just the historical aspect of racism in Britain and the insidious racism in this county but fundamentally it is a wake up call for white people to stop disengaging from, and being in denial about, the issue of structural racism in the UK. Uncomfortable? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely. Don’t be misled by the title of @emmadabiri book Don’t Touch My Hair. It is not talking about hair on a superficial level. Rather, it is tackling the issue of race through the politics of black hair, hair that has long been stigmatised and discriminated against. It is utterly brilliant. @chimamandangoziadichie is possibly my favourite writer in the world . She humanises the black experience and enables the reader to see black people in a fresh way that completely eschews the stereotypical ideas people have around black lives. Everyone should have her on their reading list. And Finally, 😊 I included my book Palette, the Beauty Bible for Women of Colour. I wrote this book for women of colour, for black women - women that the beauty industry has long failed to consider as a valid part of the beauty conversation because we don’t fit into the Eurocentric ideal of what is deemed beautiful. The video that follows is me reading an extract from this. And that’s my list. It is short but powerful. I hope they take scales off and change the way you think about race, racism, prejudice and bias not just in the UK but in the world.
