The legendary portraitist Richard Avedon came of age, artistically and sexually, in the high bohemia of the 1940s and ’50s. The summer of 1946, in particular, was a fertile one for Dick—as everyone called Avedon—barely 23 and sharing a beach house with his Harper's Bazaar boss, Lillian Bassman, and her husband, photographer Paul Himmel, in Cherry Grove, a community of bohemian intellectuals on Fire Island.
