Sometime in 1966, the songwriting team of Nickolas Ashford, Valerie Simpson & Josephine Armstead were attempting to write a #1 hit. After a fruitless day of writing, Ashford declared, "Let's go get stoned," meaning, "Let's go get a drink." The next day, they wrote a song based on that title, and it was recorded by both Ray Charles and The Coasters. When you listen to this single, most listeners assume the song is about drugs. However, that assumption comes with good reason. Ray Charles’s version of the song was released shortly after Charles was released from rehab after a 16-year heroin addiction.⁣

Another fun fact about this song is that it’s closely associated with the Woodstock movement. Joe Cocker, made sure of that when he sang it as part of his set to open Day 3 of the festival.⁣
