Crowds of mourners have gathered this week outside the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., as Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Sept. 18, lies in repose at the top of the steps under the Portico. On assignment for TIME, Gabriella Demczuk photographed families and individuals who came to honor Ginsburg and her legacy on Sept. 23. Among them were Elaina Gibson, 13, with sisters Sylvia, 9, center, and Caroline, 11, right, from Kansas City, Mo. They drove 18 hours with their mother, Nicolette Gibson, to be at the public viewing. "We talk a lot about women's equality and equality for all," Gibson said, "but you can't know about it without talking about Ruth." In the second image: Shelly Quintanilla from Arlington, Va., with her sons Dominic, 7 months, and Damian, 5. "It's something I want for my sons, to see how far women have come," said Quintanilla. "She's a fabulous figure and someone I want my sons to look up to." In the third image: Larry and Angel Allen with Adrian, 9 and Larry III, 12. "It's a big moment for our country. She stood for a lot," the father said. "She fought for a cause and it’s something that we try to teach our sons." In the last image: Jen Scott from Fairfax, Va. "The world is a different place now that she isn't here," Scott said. "She cared about people that didn't have a voice… I will continue to be a voice for my LGBTQ community. This has lit a fire."
