If the future is somehow floating beyond us as infinitely fluid and reachable physical visions that we’re collectively steering the controls toward, there’s little doubt in my mind that the futures where it falls apart have a consistently surprised population that it fell just so quickly. Remember the towers and their steel?

This evolved and ongoing moment in human history, this playground of miracles, where with a little wisdom and a lot more luck we can all live multiple decades with love and wonder—it was never guaranteed. It was made to share, not to keep. From time to time we get an opportunity to alter the makeup of all things. This hasn’t been a trait of most American elections. It’s the only trait of this one.
