Last year saw a rare bright spot for representation when @jharreljerome became the first Afro-Latino to win an Emmy for acting, for his gutting portrayal of @koreykingwise in @ava's When They See Us. But this year, writes Andrew R. Chow, the Emmys have become a focal point for a contentious conversation around Afro-Latino erasure after a Los Angeles Times article, originally titled "Emmys 2020: Black nominees gain ground, Latino representation still abysmal," was perceived to pit the groups against each other while ignoring their intersection. In September, TIME convened a roundtable of Afro-Latino performers—Gina Torres (@iamginatorres), Dascha Polanco (@sheisdash), Laz Alonso (@ラズ・アロンソ), Amara La Negra (@amaralanegraaln) and Sarunas Jackson (@ronejae)—to talk about their fraught experiences in the industry and their efforts for increased authentic representation going forward.
