Forty-six people in Brevard County, Florida—the home of Cape Canaveral—have died this month from complications due to coronavirus. There won’t be a national day of mourning for those residents, it seems, or for the more than 190,000 others who have died nationwide. But 34 years ago, when seven astronauts died in the Challenger explosion shortly after takeoff from the Kennedy Space Center, the tragedy arguably changed an entire generation.

The new four-part series Challenger: The Final Flight is a painstaking, heartbreaking, and often infuriating watch, providing viewers with not only a full picture of the seven astronauts who died in the explosion, but the systemic failures and hubris that led to the crash. “The one thing that clearly separates the Challenger tragedy from the pandemic is: It’s really hard to politicize a spaceship vehicle disintegrating before our eyes,” Glen Zipper, cocreator of the Netflix documentary, told V.F. in a recent interview.
