There used to be millions of elephants roaming Africa’s huge open spaces. Their role is to transport nutrients by eating in one place and pooping in another, and to create pathways for other species through thick vegetation by knocking it with their strong tusks and weight.

Today, after two drastic surges in poaching, only 415,000 remain. Global efforts against poaching are finally beginning to make a difference on the ground. But elephants face ongoing threats, most dangerously a loss of their habitats as pressures on land increase. That’s why we need to make space for giants.
