Believe it or not there are many similarities between working with wild animals and flying aeroplanes. For one not everyone who learns to fly is going to develop or have the skills to perform aerobatics or fly fighter jets, just as not everyone who befriends a wild animal is guaranteed the ability to work with that animal on an ongoing basis. An aeroplane can be safe in the hands of someone who is experienced, skilled and competent but is an extremely dangerous weapon in the hands of someone who is not. The same goes for a wild animal. Disrespect an aeroplane and it’ll eventually bite you. Disrespect a wild animal and it’ll do the same. Fly an aeroplane when the conditions are not right or try and land it on a field that is beyond your skills set, the likelihood is that you are looking for trouble and will find it. Interact with an animal when it’s not in the mood or try to do things that are out of your skills set and the chances are, you’ll land yourself in hot water. The list of similarities goes on and on. The take home message for me is that pilots understand the risks of flying aircraft and these dangers get drummed into them constantly. I sometimes think that people who work with wild animals don’t fully understand the risks or that people who see people interacting with animals don’t, hence are taken aback when accidents happen, but the reality is that just as an experienced, skilled and competent pilot can have an accident, the same can be true for someone working with animals. #foodforthought
