How to build a great wall: Here’s how they built the Great Wall of China during the Han Dynasty almost 2000 years ago in Gansu Province. The Chinese are still using the same tamped-earth building techniques that are seen here in the Jiayuguan section. Willow reeds are rammed down between sand and gravel using 25-pound stone tools building up layers to the desired height. Though the much taller brick faced Ming-constructed wall near Beijing is the one tourists flock to today, the 5,000 mile entirety of the Great Wall was built over a period of more than 2000 years, through several dynasties. Though it's still the longest man-made structure in the world, the wall ultimately failed at its intended purpose -- to prevent incursions by Mongol invaders. #greatwallofchina #handynasty #jiayuguan #gansu #hexicorridor #silkroad
