One day. One single day. A normal day, until it wasn’t. I was in Second Grade. At that age, something that tragic and devastating was unfathomable. Even when I visited the memorial years later...it was so difficult to truly comprehend it all- and how many lives were lost. Names etched into stone, side by side. Names that we will never forget. A day we will never forget. Lives that we will never forget. We won’t forget the brave first responders and civilians willing to put their own lives on the line to save others. We won’t forget how these brave men and women united a country overcome with grief and confusion by helping us all to see that a path towards rebuilding could exist, and we needed to walk that path together. I was so far away from it then, too young to fully grasp the magnitude of it. But I see now. I see why within the name “United States of America”- “United” is by far the most important piece. United we stand. And we will never forget.
