So smart!!! • #repost @goodnews_movement (Montreal, Canada): At 163,800 square feet (close to three football fields), Lufa Farms atop of a defunct warehouse in the borough of Saint-Laurent is the largest rooftop greenhouse on the planet. It can grow food for 10,000 families, and produces enough to feed 2% of the city, while employing hundreds in the past months. The vegetables are grown inside hydroponic containers lined with coconut coir, no pesticides are used — bees pollinate the plants and ladybugs provide pest control. Rainwater is used for irrigation, and it uses a composting system.
"It’s an unbelievable step forward for hyper-local, sustainable urban farming,” said Mohamed Hage, Co-Founder and CEO of Lufa Farms. 📷: @lufafarms
