Today is World Suicide Prevention day, talking about suicide may be difficult but it is an such important topic in mental health and it is a conversation that we need to have to keep the people we love safe! @mentalhealthmattersph
Let’s talk about how we can be a better ally:
1. Start talking about mental health more openly, consistently and non-judgmentally.
2. Try and be aware of reliable mental health professionals, who can be accessed when in
need. Also, be aware of and verify suicide helpline numbers before giving them out.
3. If a person is sharing their distress, provide to them a safe space to talk. Listen to them without invalidating them- something that’s not a big deal for you may be a big deal for them . If they don’t want to talk, be with them in silence.
4. Don’t push them or burden them with help seeking- offer to be with them during the process. (For example- booking an appointment with them, accompanying them to the doc)
5. Check up on them from time to time, but also give them the space they need.
6. Check in with yourself as well, its okay to feel frustrated and upset if the person you’re talking to doesn’t seem to be getting ‘better’- respect their journey and continue to support them
