@メルセデス・ベンツ has revealed the final form of ‘Project Geländewagen’, a collaborative art project between designer @ヴァージル・アブロー and their chief creative officer, @gorden.wagener.
The artwork reinterprets the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV to evoke speed, power and the race track: apart from the windscreen, all the windows have been replaced with a mesh material; and the vehicle has been given a reduced dashboard, extra-wide smooth tires, a steering wheel, bucket seats and safety belts – features more commonly found in race cars.
The key signifier of luxury comes in the ‘filler grey’ exterior paintwork, which has been carefully sanded in patches to reveal multiple layers underneath. ‘When you see an object that was handmade or human-made, you can connect with it in a different way to if it was machined to a perfect finish,’ explained Abloh, in an exclusive interview with Wallpaper* Germany Editor @_sophielovell_.
