Nur-Sultan, known as Astana between 1998 and 2019, is the capital city of Kazackstan. In March of 2019, it was renamed Nur-Sultan in honor of the departing Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. The city stands on the banks of the Ishim River in the Northern Part of Kazakhstan 🇰🇿 As of 2020 a reported population of 1.1 million people live within the city, making it the second largest city in the country, after Almaty, the previous capital between 1991 and 1997. @forbes_kz
