I WROTE THIS ABOUT LUKA A FEW MONTHS AGO. I want to make a poetry book.

my baby,
you’re four years old now,
at an age
where you negotiate.

was it yesterday
you were softly trailing
your delicate fingers
across my ribs
as I fed you from my breast?

was it yesterday
you found your voice
and your pudgy lips
freed it
in heart-melting words
like mama?

was it yesterday
as still a clumsy walker
dressed In a leprechaun costume
you danced to Irish music
at a farmers market,
cheering and clapping at the end?

was it yesterday
you got your first
firefighter shirt
and puffed your chest,
face beaming with pride,
to announce what was on it
when asked to see.

was it yesterday
you wrote your name
for the first time,
turning the A backwards
and leaving a big space
between the arms of the K.

my baby,
I love you more now
than I ever have before,
but
I’ll always miss
all the little boys
you have been
that I’ll never hold
again.
