Walking past the Empire State Building yesterday I was happily surprised to see it was open and even more surprised that there were no lines for New York City’s most iconic landmark and most popular tourist attraction. The building's re-opening just 3 days ago is a sign that the city is back in business. It's fitting that the Empire State Building is among the first of Manhattan's tourist sites to re-open post-pandemic, since it was built during another national crisis, the Great Depression, when it became the tallest building in the world. It's a symbol of the city's resilience. No matter what the angle or the light, the Empire State still dominates the skyline. 
   These photographs from my book, New York Flying High were shot from a helicopter in 2007, but I think it's now time for a trip to the Empire State's new 102nd floor observatory to document the newcomers to the skyline -- the ungainly pinnacles that have popped up recently vying for tallest building in NYC status. Of these "pencil" buildings swaying above the city streets six are taller than the Empire, but none have its enduring place in the hearts and minds of New Yorkers. #empirestatebuilding #newyorkcity #lovenewyork
