Four years ago, I co-founded Black Women’s Freedom Circle, a collective of Black women who gather to support each other in our personal and community liberation practices. (If you’ve read my book, I write about us in chapter 2). The pandemic has been a struggle for us. It’s also been an opportunity for us to deepen our connections and commitments to each other. We’ve been particularly focused on rest—rest as a rebellion against the cult of productivity, rest as a birthright, rest as a practice, and rest as a culture. We decided that it’s time for us to create physical spaces to support Black Women’s rest. Black Women’s Freedom Sanctuaries will be beautiful, safe spaces with gardens and healing waters for, and cared for by, communities of Black women.
