OF COURSE there are good cops out there. There are great ones - they are our brothers and sisters, sons, daughters, mothers and fathers. And OF COURSE #bluelivesmatter. I don’t think anybody disagrees with these statements (if taken as points of empirical/humanitarian fact out of the current context). But right now the POINT is that racism and racist violence have been baked into the institution of policing (in overt and covert ways) since the inception of our country. We cannot sidestep this history in the current discussion. As a white man who never needed to learn these things in order to protect my own body, I am deeply humbled by my lack of historical knowledge to give context to this moment. But I am also committed to becoming more educated and adjusting my beliefs and actions accordingly.
