To maintain and increase access to water for some of the youths in Juba, South Sudan during the crisis, The Luol Deng Foundation has distributed 400 Water Backpacks to the following areas: Juba One Primary School Football ground Juba Day secondary school football ground Simba Football ground St. Tereza Kator Football ground Muniki Football ground Muniki Block C – a.k.a Barcelona Football field University of Juba, Main campus Rock city Residential area Juba Hai Cemetery, near Konykonya Market The backpacks are purchased through Partners for Care. The backpack holds 20 liters and allows people to avoid the in-transit contamination and water loss that often occurs when they transport water in buckets. A wide mouth allows for fast filling, minimizing wait time at the source point that can expose women and children to danger in unstable regions. Lighter weight (7x lighter than the average jerry can) allows for fast, high-volume emergency relief shipments. A roll-down closure reduces water loss and contamination during transit while the protected spout keeps water clean for drinking. The backpack is leak proof, durable and easy to clean and collapses when empty. By distributing the bags across Juba (and potentially across South Sudan) during and post COVID-19, allows for coaches, players, and spectators (including neighborhood residents) access to clean water throughout the day to wash hands and drink. 14 members of our LDF team distributing the bags, were trained on COVID-19 guideline that they delivered to the recipients along with the correct usage and cleaning of the Water backpacks. Persons assigned to safe-keeping and filling of the bags were identified. The bags distributed will directly impact approximately 1000 Children and adults daily.
