It feels like quintessential America in certain ways. I can see these small towns are full of people working hard to make ends meet and doing the best they can. Had (and overheard) some interesting conversations as well. Folks being exhausted by both sides of the political circus. I understand that. People wanting to be united and not torn apart. I understand that too. People who just want to get through this very difficult year and find better days. I totally get it. And I saw a lot of support for Trump. And I saw confederate flags. And I am at a loss. Let me just say that I can understand being exhausted by the liberal rhetoric and the sense of being told you are “privileged” when you don’t feel that. I can understand that when the world is changing so fast it makes you want to hold on to something you know, which looks more like status quo than a revolution. I can understand that the same issues that ravage big cities are not as prevalent here and you feel that it’s unfair to have to change your behavior for folks you don’t know. I may not agree, but I can understand. But I truly can’t understand why Trump feels like an answer. It’s an overwhelming heartbreak to me, That a man who stirs up hate and conflict has the ears of good people and is abusing them. A man who shows a complete lack of empathy and preys on people’s fears by blaming the “other” for everything. Building walls to keep you “safe”. It’s just such a profound lie. We ARE blessed to live in America, AND America is a work in progress. America can be incredible and also flawed. There is no perfect political party. There is no exact answer to the moment we find ourselves in, but I hope the angels of truth and justice find their way into our election, and deliver us to a different leader.
