My kids are smiling extra big this week because my stepbrother and his kids are visiting. It’s fun to see Mazzy play host to her big kid cousins, showing them all the cool stuff we’ve acquired in the past few months, like her LED lights, the garage freezer full of popsicles, the cases of watermelon Bai juice, the pink lights in the hot tub and our new paddle board. It’s not exactly ours. It’s on loan from a friend who needed somewhere to store it. (We’ll take it!!!!) I let them go out on the paddle board by themselves and followed along in a kayak, keeping just enough distance so that I could see and hear them, but they didn’t feel too chaperoned. They were taking digs at each other, telling private jokes and laughing so much. I just floated about 50 feet behind, ready to jump in if necessary, but really totally unneeded. It made me happy to watch them. But it also made realize how much our big kids are craving time together, away from their parents.
