I was eating Japanese food with my brother Jorge when I got the news that cancer had invaded my son. Tears ran down my cheeks like they’re running today. It was a warm day but I was cold. I’d happily and joyfully give my life in exchange for his if I could. But I’m not that Powerful, so like every other living being I’d have to wait my turn in order to see my kids again. In the meantime, I roam this Earth trying to leave it a tiny bit more beautiful than when I arrived. This is all I can do until my time to go arrives. Many of you will understand my sadness if you’ve lost someone truly special in your life. My last true sadness before BJWT came when I was a kid and I lost my grandparents and uncle to an Earthquake. Don’t ask me why but out of that sadness, as a tribute to my departed grandmother, Carmen, I promised never to speak again. If she wasn’t able to speak anymore, what right did I have to talk? Sounds stupid but that’s all I could do at the time. That, and holding the last toy that I received from them, my Woody Woodpecker stuffed toy.
