In what Joe Biden aptly calls the “battle for the soul of this nation” we now have a new "first": a Black woman Vice Presidential candidate on a major party ticket, Senator @KamalaHarris. The surge of hope this news brought cannot be overlooked. There is something profoundly healing in this new first because there is a real cost to racism and sexism. They are traumatic experiences that literally affect the mental health of black women. Long relied upon as the backbone of our families and communities, the stereotype of the “Strong Black Woman” can be a damaging one. This month we highlight black women and mental health: you’ll read about how difficult this intersection can be to navigate as COVID-19 and the trauma of racial injustice rears its ugly head over and over again. This is the time we must face wounds and find ways to care for ourselves. Thankfully, the resources do exist. From Dr. Joy Harden Bradford’s (@HelloDrJoy) podcast and organization: @TherapyforBlackGirls to @Dr.CandiceNicole Hargons who created a meditation specific to the trauma that racial injustice creates, to @TheLovelandFoundation that works to bring help and healing to communities of color. We have to continue to work towards our healing, our breakthrough. Seeing Senator Harris become a first again in November: the first black woman, first woman of South Asian heritage, first woman Vice President in the history of the United States would be another balm for black women, and for a nation desperately in need of progress towards its own ideals. But we have to show up big in November. We’re providing lots of tools to help. The link is in my bio: https://bit.ly/LOGAug2020」8月20日 6時49分 - danaigurira
