She had been pregnant with two offspring; sadly, neither survived. Izzy received a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to breed with the Zoo’s male golden lion tamarin, Pedro. Small Mammal House keepers had been closely monitoring her for the past several weeks and observed her behaving normally the day before. Keepers fondly remember Izzy for her bold and fearless nature. She was often the first to figure out new enrichment puzzle feeders and toys. She was also a master at stealing food from an older male two-toed sloth named Vlad, with whom she shared an exhibit. Izzy came to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo from Micke Grove Zoo in California in 2016. In 2018, she and another male, Mo, produced an offspring, Carolina, who recently moved to Prospect Park Zoo in New York to join their breeding program. The median life expectancy for golden lion tamarins in human care is approximately 8 years old. Izzy will be dearly missed by our Zoo community. Native to South America, golden lion tamarins are endangered social primates that live in groups of two to eight family members in the canopies of Atlantic coastal forests of southeastern Brazil. Their reddish-gold fur and mane gives them a striking appearance. Only about 2,500 live in the wild, and an additional 500 live in zoos worldwide.」8月19日 3時38分
