Today is International #LeftHandersDay and we’re celebrating by highlighting one of the most iconic left-handed players of all time, Kurt Cobain.
-
Born in 1967 in Aberdeen, Washington, Kurt Cobain founded Nirvana in 1987, whose music would define the grunge movement and inspire musicians to this day. Cobain had a playing style all his own, relying on power chords played on guitars tuned a half or whole step down. His solos deviated from those of the time, rather than aiming for virtuosity, he would typically offer variations on the song’s melody, a practice he perfected like no other.
-
When it came to defining a sound, Cobain wasn’t particular about the equipment he played, and due to sometimes-destructive performances, he would frequent pawn shops for inexpensive gear replacements, resulting in an evolving live rig. However, he preferred the sound of chorus and gain pedals, mainstay staples in his live set from 1990 onward. Around 1991, prior to recording ‘Nevermind’ Cobain developed a taste for Fender guitars due to their slender necks and reliable left-handed offerings. Throughout this era he would purchase a variety of left-handed Stratocaster models, his iconic ’65 left-handed Jaguar (with humbucking pickups in place of standard single-coils) and a ’69 Competition Mustang, which he would play in the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” music video. And though he used a variety of amplifier pre-amps, heads, and cabinets linked to the Seattle Grunge sound, Cobain also used a Fender Twin Reverb at times.

In celebration of all lefty guitarists, we’re giving you the chance to channel Kurt’s sound. One grand prize winner will receive a left-handed Kurt Cobain Jaguar and another lucky winner will score a Bubbler Analog Chorus and MTG Tube Distortion pedals. Head to the link in bio for more info, giveaway ends Sunday 8/16/20.
