Joe Biden and Kamala Harris made their first public appearance as running mates on Wednesday.

“This is a moment of real consequence for America,” Harris said. “Everything we care about, our economy, our health, our children, the kind of country we live in, it’s all on the line.”

Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, announced Harris as his pick for vice president on Tuesday. Wednesday’s appearance at Alexis I. duPont High School in Wilmington, Delaware offered the first indication of how Biden and Harris, formerly political rivals who sparred on debate stages, might fuse their messages as they campaign to unseat President Trump in the White House this fall.

The event also marked a historic occasion, with Harris taking to the stage as the first Black woman and the first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major political party.

Biden drew on the significance of this moment as he introduced Harris, saying her presence on his ticket was meaningful to “little Black and brown girls, who so often feel overlooked and undervalued in their communities, but today just maybe they’re seeing themselves for the first time in a new way.”

As they stood publicly as a political team, Biden and Harris both cast themselves as the right pair to guide the nation through both the coronavirus pandemic and nationwide protests over racial inequality and police brutality.
“I asked Kamala to be the last voice in the room, to always tell me the truth, which she will, to challenge my assumptions if she disagrees, to ask the hard questions,” Biden said.
