Beautiful Mars! Our Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter with its @uahirise camera launched 15 years ago today.
Since the veteran spacecraft began its mission, it has reshaped our understanding of the Red Planet. The orbiter studies temperatures in Mars' thin atmosphere, peers underground with radar, and detects minerals on the planet's surface. But perhaps what it's become best known for are stunning images. These enhanced color images view Mars in a different part of the spectrum than human eyes would see, to show the distinction between materials and textures. Swipe through for highlights:
1. Sand dunes in the region of Lyot Crater.
2. A towering dust devil casts a serpentine shadow over the Martian surface.
3. Cerberus Fossae, a steep-sided set of troughs cutting volcanic plains to the east of Elysium Mons.
4. A small frost avalanche in progress at the edge of the North Polar layered deposits of Mars.
5. Troughs that form a starburst pattern, believed to be formed by gas flowing beneath the seasonal ice to openings where the gas escapes.
6. Sand ripples and a large dune in Proctor Crater.
