FKAツイッグスさんのインスタグラム写真 - (FKAツイッグスInstagram)「***TAKEOVER*** ELSC have been organising events since 2013, the longest running of which is @lifedrawingwithelsc We wanted to create our own working conditions, invite new audiences into the club, whilst updating the power relationships between artist & muse. True to our East London roots, the class is based in Shoreditch at an ex-strip pub: @crownandshuttle. Organisers are strippers who are also artists. The poses are dynamic and fast paced, involving breath-taking aerial pole tricks. We distill sexual entertainment, feminism, art, activism and feats of athleticism all in one session. The entire business is self-funded & self-sustaining; we pay models well above the average rate for regular life modelling to reflect their talent & labour. We only have one rule: all models must have worked as a stripper or SWer at some point. We have created alternative work for members of our community outside of the regular business model of strip clubs. We also use the class as a vehicle to de-stigmatise & de-mystify the sex industry – in 2019 we partnered up with Late Nights at the Royal Academy of Arts @royalacademyarts to host a pop-up class in their prestigious life drawing room. Due to Covid we’ve moved the class online. Using web technology brings new challenges around digital safety, but also opportunities to build a new creative environment. While performing to the webcam, interacting with viewers and taking requests for poses, we reference the visual language of online SW. We also have a Q&A section of the class centring SWer voices as well as their image. Chair poses, clear plastic heels courtesy of @pleasershoes and stripper outfits feature throughout. Life drawing is just part of our broader vision for ELSC. Our ultimate goal would be to run our own venue offering a multitude of different events, reimagining the space of a strip club and reclaiming power and control over our image, labour and erotic capital.
