Photo by @クリス・バーカード Many people think that you have to travel to exotic locations to find massive desert landscapes that can produce images like this one. While the Sahara, Dubai, and Peru offer some amazing mountains of sand, you can find great deserts here in the United States. This shot is from Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park, which contains the tallest sand dunes in North America. The dunes cover a massive area once occupied by lakes. Eventually the lakes receded, allowing sediment to fill the area. Winds blew in sand from the surrounding area over thousands of years, creating these massive dunes.
In this image, a small experimental aircraft is compressed into the dune field below from 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) above the ground. That gives you a sense of how large these dunes truly are.
