From guarding the tombs of Pharaoh to being used in Biblical imagery, from being stamped on coins to sitting on national flags... the lion: the well-loved character of famed children’s stories and an iconic animal to many, Panthera leo is a fundamental part of the world as we understand it. Will the lion become a myth for future generations? Within our lifetime will the lion be relegated to the pages of fairytales? In the last century, lions have lost over 90% of their territory. With this loss, humans and lions meet face to face in situations that do not turn out well. Either, a) the lion kills a goat, sheep or cow from a rural village, robbing people of their precious livelihoods b) rural cattle farmers poison or kill a lion that is encroaching on their land or c) both of these sad situations occur What can be done? By placing a GPS collar on the main member of a lion pride, movement can be tracked and rural villages given an early warning of their arrival. Farmers can then herd their cattle into protective enclosures and avoid any of the three scenarios above. Our friends at @namibianliontrust are doing just this. Their “Protect the Pride” program uses this system to keep the special wild lions of Northern Namibia roaming free. These lions are some of the only wild lions still roaming freely in natural habitat. By working with the community, NLT is decreasing human wildlife conflict and helping locals become custodians of the lions in their country. To celebrate World Lion Day the @kevinrichardsonfoundation is partnering with @namibianliontrust to collar a new pride of lions. We will also pay the salary of a Lion Guardian for one year.
