Rose Morgan opened what Ebony magazine called “the biggest Negro beauty parlor in the world” in New York in 1947. She not only offered hair care services, but also wellness services not available to Black women at the time like skin care and massages as well as a registered nurse on staff. She was so successful that she soon expanded to also offer dressmaking services and a finishing school. Women from all over the country traveled to her establishment to receive beauty and spa-like services.  She began marketing her own cosmetics and fashion shows because she held space for and wanted to uplift authentic Black beauty; she made it a point to pamper her customers since Black women were only expected to pamper others; and made sure her staff only addressed customers by their last names to ensure they were treated with the respect they deserved but didn’t receive from society at large. And when banks wouldn’t lend her funds to grow her business because she was Black, she helped found Freedom National Bank, NYC’s only Black-owned commercial bank, to help Black people access capital to grow their businesses. Today, on her birthday, we honor a true pioneer of Black beauty, wellness, representation and enterprise! To learn more about Rose Morgan, go to my Story.
