The riders whooped and urged their steeds faster into a breakneck gallop, surrendering safety for the thrill of flight. Such is the life of a cowboy, or pantaneiro. These horsemen have made their home in Brazil's wild savannas for the last 200 years. They live closely in tune with the seasonally flooded landscape, sharing the space with an astonishing amount of biodiversity, including jaguars, giant anteaters, and ostrich-like birds known as greater rheas.
