Photo by @bertiegregory A female harp seal with frozen whiskers looks toward the camera in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Canada. In early spring these seals travel south from their Arctic feeding grounds to give birth on ice floes. During cold periods they must use their sharp claws to ensure their breathing holes do not freeze up. On cold, windy days, their whiskers often freeze shortly after getting out of the water and onto the ice.
