Meet Lina’la’ and Gekpu! The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute’s 3.5-month-old Guam Kingfisher chicks just received their names, thanks to our friends at the Guam Division of Aquatic and Wildlife Resources and the residents of Guam.
. . .
The birds’ monikers come from the Chamorro language, which is spoken by indigenous people of the Mariana Islands. Our female was named Lina'la' (lee-NAT-la), which means “life.” Male Gekpu (GEH-k-pooh) name means “ability to fly.” With less than 140 Guam kingfishers remaining in the entire world, every chick is precious.
