Famed for his snaggletooth, the result of a fight with Scarface some 4 years earlier, he was also the most confiding. His favoured fishing spot, where he would spend his days lounging in the river, was the closest to where sat, and on this occasion he decided that he might come a little closer. He remained in the river, his mighty bear butt cooled by the constant flow, but decided to rest instead on a different rock. Here he lay for some time, running through a model-like repertoire of poses. ‘Give me contemplation Toothy, now look away wistfully, into the near distance’. It’s rare indeed for an animal to be quite so co-operative and given the river behind, all cluttered and distracting, the only option was to go in tight. I needed to try and achieve front to back sharpness as there was little point having nice sharp eyes but then having both the nose and paws drifting frustratingly out of focus. As such I increased my ISO to 3200 and then set my aperture at F16. This gave me a corresponding shutter speed of 1/400sec, more than enough to freeze the gentle movement as Toothy’s head swayed side to side, giving us all manner of compositional possibilities.
