Her baby, Khloe Sha-Asia Ann Lopez, survived. ⁣ ⁣ Doula Latham Thomas (@glowmaven) spoke to BAZAAR about Washington’s “preventable” death–and how the U.S. medical system at large is failing Black mothers. “If you think about the way that we look up to doctors, or that we feel like we’re beneath them, it is very much in the same way that we act in submission to law enforcement,” she said. “If you look at the parallels between what we’re seeing in terms of state violence on-screen, on our phones, in the streets, that’s happening disproportionately to Black and Brown people. You can also see a similar pattern in terms of how Black bodies are treated inside of another institution, which is the American medical system. This goes beyond birth, and how Black and Brown bodies are treated in those spaces.
