Seeing dolphins in their natural environment is a surreal and incredibly exciting experience. But if we're not careful, our excitement can harm their natural behaviors. So it's important that we are respectful when we're in the dolphin's home. Here are some general rules: 1. DO NOT CHASE. Most of the time dolphins swim up to you and then pass by. It can be very tempting to try to follow them. But this is a predatory behavior that makes the dolphins nervous. Also, you'll never be as fast as them. 2. Don't dive directly down on dolphins if they are below you. If dolphins are swimming one way, and you're swimming at them in another, that's jarring for the pod. You'll probably scare them away sooner if you dive straight at them.   3. Pay attention to dolphin behaviors and don't splash. When dolphins are distressed, they have a number of ways to communicate that, such as slapping their heads or tails on the surface of the water. All of this creates splashing, so it makes sense that it also stresses them out when other animals in the water splash around them.   Thank you to @moisthawaii for asking us to spread this important message! If we follow these rules and give dolphins distance so that we can passively observe, they might let us observe them longer. The ocean rewards patience and respect.   Mahalo for your kokua!  . . . . . . #westoahu #oahudolphins #dolphins #noaa #oceania #saveourseas #discoverocean」7月29日 10時10分 - dolphinsandyou
