Over the past few weeks (and let’s be honest my entire career), I’ve had a lot of people saying: “You’re just an influencer, posting on IG doesn’t help” or “Stick to modeling” in regards to my amplifying focus on social justice issues.
For those of you that are new here, or maybe need a reminder of who I am:
I’m not an influencer. I’m an activist and have been for over a decade. Modeling is my career & allowed me to come into who I truly am, and find my true purpose, which is advocacy. As someone who has been part of changing societal standards towards beauty in the fashion industry, I can tell you change doesn’t happen from being “nice”. It comes from speaking out, again and again and AGAIN until people cannot ignore you and I’m tired as hell of folks dismissing the severity of what’s going on.
You cannot sugar coat the BRUTALITIES against Black, Brown & Indigenous people in our country. They’ve been nice for hundreds of years (don’t @ me) while their land was stolen & watched their people being murdered & they are *still* getting murdered. So yea, I’m thinking about what I’m saying, & I understand for some of y’all, this isn’t what you wanna see on IG, & if y’all wanna follow other models on IG who have a massive platform & don’t use it to speak out against injustices happening because they are more concerned with their image, I can give you some names of people to follow.🤷🏻♀️🙃
So please think about what I’ve said, & enjoy this photo of me on my couch, with an unwashed face in my pajamas, listening to Gary Clark Jr & writing emails to local & government officials demanding justice for Black & Brown brothers & sisters. I don’t care if I’m liked, I just care about showing my sons what it really looks like to give a shit about others. Love y’all! #BlackLivesStillMatter
