Photo by @daisygilardini A young black bear climbs a tree in the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. What to do when escaping from a bear? Running or climbing a tree is not your best option. A black bear can sprint up to 35 miles an hour (56 kilometers an hour) and climb a hundred feet (30 meters) up a tree in 30 seconds.
Making a lot of noise while hiking in bear country is a good way to avoid confrontation with a bear. If you do find yourself at a close range with a bear, don’t run! Stay calm, stand your ground, and face the bear. Talk to the bear with a calm but firm voice so it can identify you as a human. Back away slowly.
With black bears, attack is usually a bluff. Say no loudly and firmly. Maintain eye contact and back away slowly. If the bear continues to charge, and it is not a bluff, use pepper spray. If the bear attacks you physically, fight back as hard as you can.
