"With all the racial tension and injustices involving Black people in America, I often find myself crying and worrying about how our children are REALLY being affected. We have talks with them to ensure they’re OK. Hearing our children’s perspective on racism and all that our nation is currently facing, literally breaks my heart. As parents we want so desperately to protect our children from racial inequality and injustices, but the unfortunate truth is that they may have to face obstacles because of the color of their skin that we cannot shield them from. I know many of us as parents are trying to navigate through the current climate of our nation. One of the things we’re using are family movie nights. We watch movies that create conversations around racism, its origins in American history, and why it still exists in our society. We discuss how the kids feel afterwards, and what they should do if they experience anything similar. This has been an awesome way to start conversations with our children. Often, I weep with them and try to convey that this may be our current reality but in optimism, I assure them that a change will come. I believe we are on the verge of it.
