“To treat white-cheeked gibbon Sydney’s chronic hypoglycemia, the primate team worked closely with Zoo veterinarians and nutritionists. Keepers Emily Bricker (his primary trainer) and Val Schultz (his secondary trainer) trained Sydney to allow frequent voluntary toe pricks using a lancet and glucometer so we could monitor his blood glucose levels and adjust his diet and medications accordingly. Reliably obtaining blood glucose curves was a major animal training accomplishment for our team and enabled us to provide Sydney with the best possible care and treatment, especially during the last year of his life.”—Meredith Bastian, Curator of Primates
