I’ve seen this image floating around and it makes me think of broader issues on the continent that African founders, entrepreneurs and businesses face. The mechanics of lack of access and resources that plague Black business and entrepreneurship in America also exist in the barriers to opportunity in many African countries and markets. In the case of tech, Silicon Valley investors have come to Africa as the exciting new frontier, but are opting to invest in founders that look more like them than the very people who the solutions are intended to serve.
The multinational banks that operate in Africa also discriminate in how they make lending accessible. These are just examples. And signs of progress are still only exceptions to the rule. The rule still exists. It is not good enough to bring capital. That’s nothing to celebrate — the continent is naturally attractive for its resources and market size. It is up to us to hold institutions and systems accountable for how they engage, and to expose when they’re perpetuating inequality of opportunity. There’s a need to rethink our resources as untapped wealth, and our leverage, rather than as a peace offering to saviors. Otherwise, we let the abundance of our need keep us locked in as a permanent underclass. Anything short of African solutions for African problems is settling. Africans empowering Africans is the way forward to shifting mindset.
