Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.” John Lewis, a giant of the civil rights movement, wrote these urgent words in July of last year. On Friday, he passed away at 80 years old after having dedicated his whole life to making “good trouble.” He began as a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in 1960, famously participated in the Freedom Rides, and marched on Washington D.C. and in Selma, Alabama. At the time of his death, Lewis remained committed to the struggle for justice, becoming both witness and a guide to a new generation of activists in the Black Lives Matter movement. “Today, young people are taking up the mantle in a movement that I know all too well,” he said in a statement this past June. “All over the world, communities are once again joining the call for racial equity and equality.
