Representative John Lewis, an icon of the civil rights movement and one of the original Freedom Riders who went on to serve more than three decades in Congress, has died at 80. In his 2019 Proust Questionnaire, Lewis told Vanity Fair: "I don't want to die. I don't think I'm going to die…but we all have to die. Since I do, I hope I live on in the hearts and minds of people."
