Outfit DNA 🧬 Do you read the label on your clothing? Do you choose your clothes based on how they're made and who made them? Our labels don’t give us the full story. Beyond the label is a whole chain of events that we've been unaware of for too long now.

We need to know who and what we're supporting beyond the store. Before we buy something, we must learn more about the real cost this item is having on the planet.

Our clothes are grown in the planet's soil, we often forget that. There's a farmer who grew the cotton, and then there's somebody who spun the threads, and another person who wove the fabric and yet another who sewed it into the garment...and what I just described hasn’t even been dyed, printed, pleated or accessorised with buttons, zips (and perhaps velcro) yet!

So looking at the label, how do we know if our clothing is made in an ethical and environmentally friendly way?

Unfortunately, it's still up to the consumer to do a lot of the work to figure that out. When I started on my sustainability journey, it took a while to get the full, honest picture.

But I've learned that as consumers, we have the power to demand more transparency.

How?

1. Labor and environmental issues affect BIPOC and low-income communities the most. Research BIPOC-owned brands and support them. We have a lot of work to do and this is one way to help make ethical and sustainable fashion more inclusive.

2. The next time you're looking to buy a piece of clothing, make it part of the purchase decision to assess how sustainable and ethical the brand is first.

3. Read the label. Don't know what anything means? Google the materials and the impacts those materials have on the 🌍.

4. Go to the brand's website. Do they have any info on what they're doing to be more sustainable? If not, email them. Tweet them. Leave a comment on Instagram.

5. Ask the brands you're buying from what they are doing to produce their clothing in a healthy and ethical way. What does their supply chain actually look like? Where are their factories? What are the working conditions in those factories?

I repeat - we have the power to demand more transparency. We really do!
