On June 7th, protesters in Bristol removed the historic statue of slave trader Edward Colston that stood in the city centre. Today, a new monument takes its place. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ On June 7th, Jen Reid stood on the empty plinth and raised her arm in a Black power salute. After seeing an image of this on social media, artist Marc Quinn has collaborated with Reid to create the sculpture ‘A Surge of Power (Jen Reid) 2020’.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ "Seeing the statue of Edward Colston being thrown into the river felt like a truly historical moment; huge,” says Reid. "This sculpture is about making a stand for my mother, for my daughter, for Black people like me. It’s about Black children seeing it up there.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ "Jen and I are not putting this sculpture on the plinth as a permanent solution to what should be there - it’s a spark which we hope will help to bring continued attention to this vital and pressing issue.
