At the height of the Black Lives Matter protests, the NYPD was repeatedly recorded using force against peaceful protesters. We reviewed more than 60 of those videos. They show that in many situations, the force did not appear warranted. But in case after case, police officers could be seen answering demands to end violence by committing more of it — often while being led by high-ranking officers.

Some videos show officers attacking people with their hands up. Others show them beating people who were already on the ground. One video caught a single officer attacking three people in less than 30 seconds.
