I’ve lost a lot of mobility in my hip due to the reconstructed pelvic bone. The flume pool has been a great device to build back strength and flexibility. Through the use of this counter-current pool, I can work towards regaining the mobility that I lost. In the last clip, you can see my excitement as I accomplish something that I could not even fathom initially. I tried to do a step-up with my operated leg, and as much as my mind wanted to, my body just didn’t know how. I did the step up on my right side, then reverted back to my (operated) left. Suddenly, it clicked. This, to me, was a perfect example of the mind-body connection that can be sharpened through cross-lateral body motions.
My PT sessions are often rewarding, yet also daily reminders of my current limitations. It is tough to not be able to move your body in what would normally be a thoughtless motion. At the same time, though, I am hopeful that through this journey I will build more body awareness that I can apply as I progress beyond the point of full recovery. This week I will find out the date of my next two surgeries, sometime in the upcoming couple months. There is one side of me that just wishes to get them done as soon as possible. The more logical side of me knows that I need to go in to surgery as recovered as possible on this left side, before tackling another two big operations on my right. 2020 has been a weird year. Challenging, and unforeseen. Of course my reality is filled with privilege and for that I am so grateful and driven to find ways to make the most of my own leverage to contribute forwards. And yes- this is a silly pool exercise video. But I do hope that as I rebuild from my broken down state, it can serve as a reminder to anyone of you in need of hope, that the daily efforts, however small they may be, matter.
